Every specimen that enters the laboratory represents a patient. Patients’ lives matter!
At SMLTSA we promote and develop the education and continuing professional development of Medical Laboratory Professionals while always mindful of whom our “clients” are. To that end we strive to contribute to the development of competent and qualified MLP’s who are in turn able to provide the best care to each specimen processed. We benchmark our education with world standards and our MLP’s can proudly share their expertise to the world at large.

SMLTSA Administered Board Exams
The HPCSA Board Examinations for MLP’s are administered by the SMLTSA under an MOU with the Professional Board for Medical Technology (PBMT) of the HPCSA.
The SMLTSA Head office offers administrative support for all MLP Students with regards to Board Exam Applications in the categories of
• Medical Technologists
• Medical Technicians
• Laboratory Assistants.
BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science
The National Diploma in Biomedical Technology (NQF 6), and the postgraduate BTech degree in Biomedical Technology (NQF 7) have been phased out and replaced by the 4 year degree, BHSc: Medical Laboratory Science (NQF 8, honours level).

Continual Professional Development
SMLTSA is an HPCSA Professional Board for Medical Technology (PBMT) appointed Accreditor for CPD to our profession.
The society co-ordinates, facilitates and publicises on-going educational opportunities, such as CPD functions, webinars and congresses.
All Service Providers of CPD Events/Activities pertaining to the profession are welcome to contact the SMLTSA Office Manager for further information and advice on how to have your events accredited.
SMLTSA members forego individual fees when they apply to have their activities assessed for CPD.
Networking
MEMBERSHIPS
There are currently six SMLTSA branches in South Africa and interested medical technologists can join any one of these branches.
Each branch elects its own committee, which communicates directly with the Executive Committee (EXCO) via the Administrative Office based in Cape Town.
Branches are autonomous bodies acting within the SMLTSA Constitution.

SMLTSA Membership entitles you to:-
- Participate fully in your local branch activities.
- Voice your opinion through this professional channel.
- Full voting rights on the selection of persons who are elected to office within the Society.
- Stand for election to office within the branch.
- Stand for election to office on national committees.
- Free admission to most continuing professional development activities (CPD). CPD events are arranged by your local branch to assist you in attaining your legally required annual CPD points.
- Special privileges when attending academic mornings and national congresses arranged by the branches of the Society which may include reduced entrance fees and entry into ‘members only’ competitions.
- Nominate worthy colleagues to be recipients of awards offered by the Society to members only.
- Be eligible to receive the ‘members only’ awards on offer.
- Full membership of the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists (IFBLS).
- Be eligible for ‘members only’ awards on offer from the IFBLS.
- Create public awareness of our profession.
- Advance your professional network through joining your local branch.
- Liaison with various stakeholders in the interest of the profession.
